2023-12-18

China's prestigious Wuhan University in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, together with the East African International University and Blue Sky Carbon International, has launched the African Carbon Initiative and Carbon Alliance at the COP28 United Nations climate change conference in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

The initiative, signed on Dec 3, aims to monitor the forest carbon sinks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo with the help of satellite remote sensing and laser radar technologies, according to a media release from Wuhan University.

Gong Wei, vice-president of Wuhan University, said the technologies provide accurate measurements of forest carbon inventories, and can eliminate errors caused by human factors.

They offer a feasible path for the comprehensive management of forest carbon sinks and certification of high-quality carbon credits, he noted.

The initiative also covers an agreement on forest carbon sink development and carbon asset management between the Blue Sky Carbon International and the governments of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
